Prints On Paper Studio brings deep scientific knowledge and masterful skills to the field of collaborative printmaking

We are targeting early April 2024 for our opening. For more info: hello@printsonpaper.studio

Our unique approach to printmaking allows for an adaptable, inclusive, and accessible studio. Artists from all walks of life, locations, and mediums are welcome to contact us and participate in this innovative endeavor.

At the studio we are guided by a few key principles . . . . Everyone is included and welcome. The studio is a place for learning and sharing of knowledge. We are here to have fun and work hard. We exist to solve problems for artists and make beautiful print objects. And we strive to make the studio a rock solid, dependable, safe, custom, experimental production space that people can depend on for years.

About Us

The studio is owned and operated by Nathanael Kooperkamp and Walker Blackwell. These two artists come from different backgrounds (Photography and Printmaking). Over the years they both helped develop some of the leading print processes in the world today and they continue their innovative work at Prints On Paper.

Walker Blackwell (he/him) is a collaborative printmaker, teacher, and inventor who has been at the forefront of the digital printing world since 2004. Specializing in monochromatic inkjet, he co-coined the term “pigment print” to refer to mechanically produced pigmented inkjet prints in the early 2000s. A founder of Black Point Editions (Chicago) and co-founder/funder of Latitude Chicago, Walker has collaborated with many top artists world-wide to produce unique works. He often develops new printing techniques on-the-fly based on the requirements for a specific artist or print. As lab coordinator for Light Work residency in Syracuse New York, he was able to completely gut and renovate the space to bring it to modern standards. Later he became the head innovator in the fine art printing industry. Walker has taught printing technique for over twenty years in different venues both in community workshops, one-on-one, and at the university level. Teaching (and learning) is integral to his practice as a printmaker and artist and he continues this practice at Prints On Paper.

Nathanael Kooperkamp (he/him) is a printmaker, papermaker, bookmaker, and teacher. Trained as a traditional printmaker, his work spans the history of this art form while interpreting it through a digital output. Nathanael’s training and personal interests have also led him to what he considers to be the most rewarding part of the artworld–being a collaborative master printmaker. Upon completing his masters in fine arts at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Kooperkamp had the opportunity to explore the process of hand papermaking at Dieu Donne studio in Brooklyn. There he worked with artists, assisted with workshops and participated in the running of a Fine Art collaborative Paper studio. He went on to work at Cone Editions Press, where he was privileged to have the opportunity to work with artists from diverse backgrounds, supporting them in their artist vision and process–often from the germination of an idea to the final product, from the proofing to the packing. Kooperkamp’s understanding of tradition combined with contemporary technologies allowed him to expand and grow the studio’s ability and output. He now brings this enthusiasm to Prints on Paper Studio where opportunities to expand are endless. While continuing to honor the tradition of the medium, his approach to collaborating with artists of all backgrounds will continue to evolve as digital capacities develop, and he works with his partner to innovate new and exciting processes.
