Photogravure Workshops at Prints on Paper are hands-on classes designed to teach you both basic and advanced techniques utilizing super high-quality plates.

In these workshops we delve into everything about photogravure printing from imaging, inking, and editioning — to wet packing paper, chine-collé, and experimental multi-plate printing. All of this is made possible by our unique plate making methods. The cost of each workshop is less than the value of the plates we produce for you during the time you are here printing (and you get to take the plates and prints home to boot).

In addition to the printmaking workshops, we also offer consultation and studio setups both remotely and in-person. This includes teaching you how to produce our plates utilizing the most recent Epson printer models and most advanced software.

2024 Photogravure Workshops

Photogravure Two Day Workshop
$900.00

This intensive workshop teaches the analogue photogravure process. At the start of the workshop, each attendee receives ten photogravure plates premade from their images. The workshop will focus on printing techniques and establishing best practices within the medium. A variety of advanced techniques will be introduced as well such as “Chiné-Colle” (with a variety of papers) and “À la poupée”, where you can spot color your photogravure plates. Professional studio setup and best practices will also be demoed. Some limited post-workshop support will also be provided.

  • Six 6x9” plates, four 8x10”  plates. ($910.00 value). The price of the pre-made plates included in this workshop are more than the cost of the actual workshop. Essentially this means we are doing the workshop for the price of the plates only. We want people to learn this process!

  • At this time we are using the workshop revenue to finish building the studio. We will be unable to issue refunds. However any booked workshop can be moved to a different available date or be used for custom plate production.

  • You do not need any prior experience to take this workshop!

  • Four guest rooms available (The Red House), $175/night including cleaning fee and lunch ingredients in fridge. Camping available for $15/night.

  • Bring a hard-drive with digital files on it (photographs, vector, scans you name it). Bring original work if you want it scanned to work on. Bring a laptop and any monitor adapters you have. :)

Photogravure Four Day Workshop
$1,700.00

During this four day intensive photogravure workshop, we dive into the intricacies of the medium. Participants start with a suite of ten pre-made plates and get going right away the first day with a variety of gravure printmaking techniques. Attendees get a chance to create a second batch of plates part way through the workshop reacting to their already-printed images. This helps establish best practices when imaging for low-contrast mediums like gravure.

This workshop delves into the complexities of the medium: multi plate printing, Chiné-Colle, À la poupée, and a variety of papers. This workshop gives attendees a chance to broaden their experience level as well as learn best practices from a professional studio. As a print-focused workshop, the intention is to leave with a decent amount of prints. It is not a tech centered workshop but more about traditional printmaking techniques applied to the unique digital gravure plates we create at Prints on Paper. Techniques and knowledge learned during the workshop allow participants to flourish in their art practice.

Platemaking & Printmaking Studio Setup/Consultations

We offer photogravure and digital setup services for community studios, university/college studios, and occasionally for commercial print publishers or artists who want to utilize advanced platemaking directly. The purpose of these setups is to design a workflow for your studio. Our staff can create, train and implement a custom setup for photogravure, digital negative and inkjet on alternative media types. We do this work remotely and in person. Our setups are designed to work with equipment already in house requiring no new large equipment purchases and often we can engineer a platemaking solution on-the-fly for whatever printing equipment is present. If there is a critical piece of equipment missing before the setup, we’ll address that ahead of time in the initial conversation. These trainings can begin with a consultation to evaluate your particular needs and Prints on Paper staff can tailor a set-up that includes a defined workflow with staff training. Our staff is flexible and can create these specific workflows either on-site or remotely.

To schedule an initial free consultation around your studio setup needs, please fill out the form below and we’ll be in touch!
